Emancipated from their slaves name since the day they pollarded their bulky Cafe-Creme label of origin to keep just a double C, now a simple military decoration. Connected to the Afro-beat diaspora that goes from the cofounder Tony Allen, to Israeli Kutiman, the New Yorkers of Kokolo, Nigerian Kologbo (Africa 70) or the Canadians of the Souljazz Orchestra ; ©© Les Freres Smith, for a decade, oil and sharpen its musical arsenal with a surgical and a meticulous precision. Contreband Mentality ! In the concealment of a studio they religiously occupy every week or on stages where their disposition sometimes can be assimilated to a Tetris game (2009. Paris. Spilled burning hundreds of times in Parisian concert pits (Bellevilloise, Glaz'art, Cithéa, Réservoir, Bus Palladium…) and more generally in France and Europe (United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands…), their afro-eruptive balm bewitches their audience, leaving no other choice than standing up, raise their fists with one unique rallying shout: « Smith ! Smith ! Smith ! » chanted until total exhaustion. The first album, Contreband Mentality, produced by les Freres Smith themselves with support and precious help by mythical afrobeat label Comet Records led by Eric Trosset, featuring the great Tony Allen and the crazy guitarist minister Oghene Kologbo from Fela's Africa 70, was mixed by afrobeat specialist Loik Dury (Kraked Records), and mastered by experienced producer Grant Phabao (Timec). Groove verrouillé, impulsions jazz, transes tribales, vibrations funk, le son Smith prend sa source dans les influences multiples de chacun de ses membres, mais c'est dissimulé derrière la moustache de Mulatu Astatké, avec le manteau de fourrure de Fela sur le dos et les bottines de James Brown aux pieds qu'il s'insinue dans les cerveaux. Habitués à passer la pulsation en fraude, ©© les Frères Smith ont aussi œuvré à mettre en place une Route de l'Afro-beat. Une route à double sens qui serpente dans toute l'Europe et qui rend possibles les rencontres musicales avec les groupes affiliés Contreband Mentality. Répandu brûlant des centaines de fois dans des fosses de concerts Parisiennes (Bellevilloise, Glaz'art, Cithéa, Réservoir, Bus Palladium…) et plus généralement en France et en Europe (Angleterre, Allemagne, Suède, Belgique, Pays-Bas…), leur baume afro-éruptif envoûte le public ne lui laissant plus d'autre choix que de lever le poing avec pour seul cri de ralliement un « Smith ! Smith ! Smith ! » scandé jusqu'à épuisement total. L'album Contreband Mentality, produit par les Frères Smith avec le support et l'aide précieuse du mythique label Comet Records dirigé par Eric Trosset, featuring le seul et unique Tony Allen ainsi que le fantasque minista guitariste Oghene Kologbo du Africa 70 de Fela, a été mixé par l'expert afrobeat Loik Dury (Kraked Records), et masterisé par l'expérimenté producteur Grant Phabao (Timec). -
