Do we want a world ruled by a few billionaires, intent on controlling the planets resources with the goal of serving their increasingly voracious appetites? Do we want more debt, privatization and markets where robber barons elevate themselves above the rules and regulations that apply to the rest of us? Accounting systems that fail to record the most egregious costs? Magazine cover "heros" who exploit their workers, pay fortunes to lawyers and lobbyists to defend the status quo, and ship their money to overseas tax havens? Do we want to buy from corporations that finance the overthrow of democratically elected governments? Undermine our own presidents and elected officials? Do we want to raise our children on a planet where less then 5 percent of the population consumes more then 25 percent of the resources, less than 10 percent of that 5 percent control the assets, and roughly half the world lives in poverty? Where violence continues to rise, and our militaristic tactics against "terrorism" force us into a constant state of siege? Or do we want something else? Do we want a world envisioned by the organizations that are striving to create a socially and environmentally responsible economy? The type of organizations we find at Green Festivals, local markets, in stores and on websites that are committed to the triple bottom line? Do we want a world where the models for our children are the founders and managers of institutions that restore rain forests and polluted lakes, promote sustainable energy and help starving people feed themselves? Where no one is denied medical care and the right to live out the last days of his or her life in dignity? In short, do we want to break the old pattern, rid ourselves of the viral form of predatory capitalism that is failing us so badly, and bequeath a world to future generations that reflects the ideals of true democracy, a world headed toward sustainable, just and peaceful societies for us all? The choice does not lie with Barack Obama. Or John McCain. The choice is ours."
