New year, new (an' old) obsessions. Look closely, cupcake.


I've been listening to Scott Matthews for the last few weeks. "Elsewhere" is nourishing my heart an' mind; "Passing Stranger", too. Mmm, mm, good.


I've been revisiting Joao Gilberto's self-titled release from 1974. Beautifully understated. It's the perfect remedy for a cloudy thought.


Hadn't really investigated Brubeck passed the classic perfection of "Time Out". Been spending sometime with "Time In" an' am finding it to be fucking amazing. There's an edginess to it that's been putting an extra pep in my step.


I love Serge Gainsbourg. 'Didn't initially, but over the last three years, hooked. I've loads of the albums, but what I've been studying most is the five disc collector item titled, "100 Plus Belle Chansons". It's such an extensive lesson, covering four decades of a genius... A must-have.


Rufus Wainwright, "Rufus Wainwright". An old favorite of mine. Come gather, all you down trodden, hopeless romantics. The Prince has spoken an' has said: "Love an' longing are the same shit. Shit... Shit! Fuck it. Lets cry into our glasses of (insert your poison here) an' keep lookin'..." Amen.


There's a group in my top called, "Belle Brigade". Unfortunately, they don't have a record, BUT, the tunes you can stream are some of the most amazing, melodic, well crafted ditties. "Sweet Louise" an' "Rusted Wheel" are my faves.


Still hooked on Grizzly Bear's, "Vekatimest", as everyone should be.


Chuck Berry, "The Great Twenty-Eight". Indeed.


The Kinks, "Something Else...". Not only is it a gem for the bittersweet, "Waterloo Sunset", but also, "No Return", a lovely surprise that stands out from the usual sound of the fellas. Every last bit of it is an auditory pleasure.


I first heard Menahan Street Band last summer. "Make the Road By Walking", (also the album title) was in constant rotation on Radio Nova. Everytime I listen to that recording, I'm back at my flat on Championnet an' the weather is the warmest an' brightest it'll ever be. I stick my head outside an' smile at the passerbys below.


"A Strange Arrangement", Mayer Hawthorne. Another discovery through Nova. It's very hip these days to give a nod to Motown, but rarely is it done without a hint of pretention. This sounds like a fella who genuinely digs that particular sound of yester-year an' wants you to as well.


John Lennon, "Walls and Bridges". I listen to this when I'm at my wits end. I've been listening to it quite often.


Midlake, "The Trials of Van Occupanther". I've been known to, (an' will continue to, undoubtedly) describe this record as: Gerry Rafferty calls up Fleetwood Mac, (post blues), says, "Wanna grab a drink?" "Where?" "Over at Rufus Wainwright's" "Okay, dig it." An' then the three of them start drinkin' like mad an' decide to make a super group. Et voilà.


Q-Tip, "The Renaissance". I think he's not only saving hip-hop with this album, but pushing it where it belongs; creating a catalyst for future artists of any/every genre.


Guy Barker, "The Amadeus Suite"... Amazing... Amazing. Do yourself a favor an' get your mind blown.
