Bio:

A la confluence de l’Orient et de l’Occident. Ma musique de prédilection est la musique classique indienne, nulle part ailleurs ai-je trouvé à la fois cette profondeur et cette intensité du sentiment qui correspond si bien à ce silence du fond du cœur qui ne trouve d’écho que dans les êtres chers. Et comme « l’amour donne l’autorité sur ceux que l’on aime », je me suis approprié cette tradition et j’en ai fait un mode de vie qui fait de chaque jours de cette « ascèse » musicale un pèlerinage aux sources et une réitération d’engagement avec cet « orient de l’être » en chacun de nous. J’ai vécu à Bénares en Inde entre 1980 et 1991,et j’ai appris dans le mode propre à la tradition orale avec des maîtres tels Pandit Ramdas Chakravarty et Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan au sitar et avec Pandit Balchandra Patekar au chant khyal. J’ai aussi étudié à la Banaras Hindu University d’où je suis sorti avec un« Master’s Degree » en musique classique indienne, histoire et théorie incluses. Sur se site vous trouverez des exemples de cette musique classique d’Inde du nord, au sitar et au chant Khyal. Vous y trouverez aussi des enregistrements de musique dite « fusion » , pour manque d’un meilleur terme, qui correspondent aux aventures auxquelles j’ai participé en France où je me suis établi en 1998.J’estime que c’est le devoir d’un artiste de participer aux mouvances de son époque mais aussi et surtout de garder en tout lieu son intégrité , afin de rester fidèle à cette inspiration première sans laquelle l’art est vide de sens, cette inspiration qui pour moi est à la confluence de l’Orient et l’Occident. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// At the confluence of East and West. Whoever said “the twain shall never meet” was obviously too busy driving an empire to get down to business and learn the lessons that eastern traditions had to teach him.Luckily for us we are born at a time when bigotry is seen for what it is: a handicap, and we can “appropriate” ourselves any culture we have an affinity for. In my case it’s Indian classical music. Nowhere have I found the same depth and intensity of feeling that so well corresponds to that deep silence of the heart that finds an echo only in our loved ones, and since “love gives authority”, I made this music my own and it has become a way of life for me, where musical practice is a daily pilgrimage to that fundamental place within, that “Orient of our being”, I think Malraux said that... I lived and learned in Benares , India, between 1980 and 1991, in the oral tradition with Pandit Ramdas Chakravarty and Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan on sitar, and Pandit Balchandra Patekar in Khyal singing. I also have a “Masters Degree” from the Banaras Hindu University which gave me a considerable amount of theoretical and historical knowledge not readily available in the traditional context... and an array of peers to measure myself against!! On this site you will find examples of my performances of Indian classical music, on sitar and in vocal music, and some examples of the “fusion”music, for want of a better term, that characterize the adventures I’ve been involved with in France over the last 10 years,the main one being the jazz group Mukta. I definetly believe in being part of one’s time and society, but mainly I believe in never losing sight of that initial inspiration, that initial vision. I take my stand at the confluence of East and West, making the “twain meet” again and again. East meets west, and west eats meat!... I hope you like the music.
