Musicien étonnant, figure emblématique de la musique réunionnaise, René Lacaille est issu d'une lignée de musiciens. Il monte sur scène à l'âge de 7 ans pour accompagner son père à la batterie, puis à l'accordéon dans les « bals la poussière », il découvre la guitare à 16 ans et même le saxophone, avec lequel il signe son premier tube « Sax Séga ». Il joue beaucoup à la Réunion dans les orchestres de bal, puis les boîtes de jazz, avant de créer un groupe mythique, Caméléon, avec Alain Peters et Loy Erlich, puis de venir en métropole. Peu à peu, il s'impose comme auteur-compositeur multi-instrumentiste, accordéoniste surtout, guitariste vagabondant du charango au ukulélé et chanteur, les frontières s'ouvrent : Europe, Afrique, Canada, Brésil, Antilles, Asie, Australie... René aime les sonorités et les rythmes métissés, les rencontres, et il joue avec ceux qui comme lui ne boudent jamais leur plaisir, quand il s'agit de partager un peu de chaleur : Manu Dibango, Youri Buenaventura, Ray Léma, Jacaues Higelin, Lo'Jo, Raul Barboza, André Minvielle, Valdir Santos, El-Sikhameya, Debashish Batthacharya, André Minvielle, Loïc Lantoine... Danyèl Waro et le guitariste américain Bob Brozman sont ses acolytes favoris : le premier participe à l'album PATANPO (1999), le second le rejoint en résidence pour l'enregistrement de DIG DIG (mars 2002), en tournée en Afrique et en Australie (2003 et 2005) et sur CORDEON KAMELEON, sorti en 2009. René Lacaille est avant tout un musicien de scène, généreux et passionné. « Son chant est malice, son timbre chaleureux...» (Le Monde ) Accompagné de quatre musiciens dont trois percussionnistes-chanteurs, il offre un concert détonnant, n'hésitant pas à reprendre des traditionnels, ségas ou maloyas, jouant ses compositions, flirtant aussi avec le blues ou la samba, avec toutes les musiques du monde, pour faire swinguer le public. Il a reçu le Prix Gus Viseur 2005 pour les musiques du monde, et le Prix Charles Cros en 2009 pour son album Cordéon Kaméléon.****************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Born in 1946, René Lacaille is the master of the spicy séga rhythms of l'Île de la Réunion, a volcanic island paradise located deep in the southwestern Indian Ocean. The embodiment of la Réunion's vitality, René is a man steeped in his culture's celebration of life and good times. As early as age 7, he learned how to command a party when he accompanied his father to perform at weddings and dances throughout the island's many towns. This was rigorous training, because the musicians had to be versatile and capable of playing the Paso Doble, cha-cha, polka, waltz, bolero, Creole quadrille, Sega, and Maloya. René masters the bongos, drums, accordion, guitar, and saxophone. The countless nights that René spent playing professionally, combined with new music arriving from other shores, provided a variety of influences for him, and his own compositions informed by flamenco, salsa, blues, rock, jazz and fusion. In his 20s, Rene abandoned the accordion for the guitar, and formed the now-legendary group Caméléon, who were the first to invent electric Maloya, blending traditional Réunion music with modern western timbres. Rene's "Sax Séga" would prove to be a hit with the francophone market,. In 1979, René moved to France and continued his musical interests in jazz and fusion. Soon after, he had a deeply moving musical encounter with the roots Réunion artist Danyél Waro, which re-kindled his interest in the accordion and Réunion musical traditions, thereby changing the direction of his musical life. Since meeting Bob Brozman in 1999, René has toured with him in Europe, South Africa, East Africa, Canada and Australia. He has been playing with Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya, Manu Dibango, Ray Lema… René's talents continue to usher him into new countries each year, helping to span his reach from Europe and Africa to South America, Russia, Asia, and the USA. ..
