  • Bio

I am a composer, saxophonist, improviser and work as a professor and researcher at USP (University of Sao Paulo/Brazil). Here we can listen at 2 compositions for piano solo (Pour les doigts d'aprs Bach/2005 and for fingers, five fingers/2004) played by the pianist Lidia Bazarian, 1 trio for piano, clarinet and violin (Jardim Japons/2007) played by Sonncias Ensemble (Lidia Bazarian, Giuliano Rosas and Eliane Tokeshi) and a piece for saxophone and viola solo and string orchestra (Fragmentos de atos vocais/2009) played by me at the saxophone, Emerson de Biaggi, viola and the Quinteto Quintal Brasileiro. There are also 2 performances from the experimental group Akronon (Tibet and Afrikanos/2003). AKRONON: The original idea of the group is to join three musicians for a practical work of free improvisation with experimental purposes, creating an environment in which the multiples possibilities of relationship between the musicians can reach their full potential. Each one must bring to this place of musical action, his own biography and his experiences as a player, composer, musical thinker, and teacher. But the essential thing to be brought in is a strong will. In a certain way, everybody is a composer, an instrumentalist and a luthier. And what is created is a world of relationships and multiplicity which is established in the interaction between the musicians, their instruments (saxophone, flutes, violin and computer) and their particular ways of musical thinking. We begin listening to the other's sound, responding to it, building with it, transforming and developing it: timbre, frequencies, rhythm, textures and densities. The SOUND itself is thought as the basic material. The inclusion of real-time electronic interaction with the aid of a MAX/MSP patch, designed by one of the musicians, optimizes the aleatory dimension of the performances. Everything unfolds with the interference of random, unexpected elements and surprise. The process, the event in motion is what matters. But the ultimate goal is to reach a kind of action-music (refering to Jackson Pollock and his action-painting), real time music, a conversation that is established between musicians. The improvisation is intended to be free and experimental since we do not pick any idiom as a reference, in spite of the fact that many idioms are inevitably present (deconstructed and redefined) in the performances, as they are present in each musician's biography. The systems and idioms are bound up (incorporated) in the musician's fingers, in the history of learning each instrument, in the environment that surrounds the musicians' lives, their playing and hearing experiences. It is important to say that in our project, the interpreters determine everything - and in this way we are, at the same time, composers - differently from the other kinds of music, which include the improvisation as an accessory element. The musicians-performers-improvisors that constitute the group are Edson Ezequiel on the violin, Rogrio Costa at the saxophone and flutes and Silvio Ferraz operating the eletronic interaction.
