  • NATIONAL HOLIDAY FOR NATIVE AMERICANS

    NATIONAL HOLIDAY FOR NATIVE AMERICANS

To:  All people of the world
    Congress of the United States
    Senate of the United States
    President of the United States

We the undersigned come together before you to request that each of these governing bodies take all necessary action to bring about a Federal Holiday for Native American Elected Leaders, To include Congressional hearings on the racial exclusion of Native Americans in movies, television, sports advertising, music companies, etc.

With the special government to government relationship between the Indian Government of America and the Federal Government it is fitting for the Federal Government to enact this holiday, and conduct Congressional hearings.

Indian governments and the people they represent are requesting that the federal government bring about a National Holiday for Native Americans to be celebrated by all citizens of America and people around the world.

This holiday would pay tribute to Indian Tribal Leaders to include Alaskan Leaders and Hawaiian Leaders. This holiday would also pay tribute to those that endured the world's longest holocaust and most costly in human lives.

It is further stated that no Indian Government nor its people find reason to celebrate and pay for Columbus Day. Seventeen states do not recognize Columbus Day. The state of South Dakota has changed Columbus day to Native American Day.

Therefore be it resolved that the Federal Government should reevaluate Columbus Day by moving it back to its original day the second Wednesday of October and not be a tax paid holiday as is St. Patrick's Day and Octoberfest, and make the second Monday of October a Federal holiday for Native Americans.

The polls we conducted across the country show that the vast majority of Americans prefer changing Columbus Day as to creating a whole new holiday.

It is inappropriate for Indian children and children of America to celebrate Columbus discovering a nation of people and not having a holiday paying tribute to the people of those nations.

    Sincerely,
    The Undersigned

I currently found this petition while trying to start on of mine for the same reason. I posted status comments about this for acouple weeks and got a overwhelming feedback from my friends on myspace and the people I talked to about this. Thanks to everyone sent me comments back, I hope each and everone of you will now go and sign this petition and tell your friends to do the same. I believe the time is overdue for this holiday after all the hardships the Native Americans have had to deal with over the many years since American was first set foot on by Christopher Columbus.  If you are interested here is the link to go  http://www.PetitionOnline.com/indian/petition.html

  • Ms Charla

I was four years old when my mother read in the Washington Post that they were holding auditions for the King and I. I had been studing voice since the age of three so she decided we should go for audition experience. I was going to sing the song Tomorrow for the audition. She dressed me up is red plaid knickers a little white shirt with a bow tied at my neck,  braided my hair with red ribbons at the end, really cute red boots, and a red jacket with Annie and Sandy lining for good luck. It was a really cold winter day so I had my red coat and hat from Neiman Marcus on top of the outfit.
I walked into the theater for my audition and began walking down the isle for my audition when a woman at the audition turned around and belted out in her biggest stage voice. "Why didn't God give me a little girl just like that?" She was dressed all in black, with her hair piled high up on her head. She wore big rings on every finger. She had a beautiful, bright, warm smile. I walked up the stairs and handed my music to the piano player and began to sing my audition song. The entire time I was singing, the lady with the big black hair mouthed the words to my song. I guess she thought she was helping me in case I forgot my words. At the end of my song, she said, "There's my Molly" Now that really confused me since I knew Molly was in Annie, afterall I had probably watched the movie a few dozen times that week alone.
The next day I was called and told that I was cast as the youngest daughter of the King in the show. I just loved going to rehearsals and soon fell in love with the lady with the big black hair, Ms Charla. The show was a huge success with sold out performances every night. When the show ended I cried every night for a couple of weeks because I missed Ms Charla and performing. My Mom called Ms Charla and asked if she would take me on as a voice student and she said yes.
When I began voice lessons with Ms Charla I was so small, the mic stand was pulled all the way down and the mic was tilted all the way down. I can remember even standing on my tip toes to sing right into the mic. I had alot of energy and I remember how worried she would get that I would hit my head on her grand piano when I bounced around. Each time after singing a song Ms Charla would hug me and say " My baby, you are so wonderful, I love you." Everything I ever sang was wonderful to Ms Charla, if she wanted me to do it differently, she would tell me. My baby that was wonderful but how about we try it this way.
My favorite times of the week were traveling over the river and through the woods to my voice lessons with Ms Charla. If I had to choose between going to a party or going for a lesson I always chose going to Ms Charlas. That was a tv series and over forty musicals ago.
I remember her coming to one of the shows I did and the entire cast was talking about her being in the audience and how we needed to do our best. The pride I felt knowing that Ms Charla was there for me. After the show she came back stage to see me. The other cast members came over to meet and greet her. She had something positive to say about every single persons performance.
Once when I was in high school she told me she had taught me all she could and I should find another teacher. I told her oh no Ms Charla, you teach me the meaning of life.
A few days after I told her I was going to record a CD, she called me one morning and told me she woke up at 3 in the morning with a song for me and scribbled it down on a note pad on her end table. I went straight to her house and I stood beside the grand piano and about an hour later, we had Big Bad Wolf.
Ms Charla is almost 70 now and my favorite times are still traveling over the river and through the woods to spend time with Ms Charla, standing beside her grand piano while she plays and I sing.
