Castle Spoilers Season 4

This just in May 14th, from TV Guide: Castle on the other hand, I just kept saying "OMG. YES! FINALLY! YES! YES! YES!" after watching the finale. I felt it was executed perfectly. We've only had to wait four seasons, and we actually see growth on Beckett's part, which enabled her to finally accept Castle's love, baggage and all. I guess, in sum, I feel like there was no growth with Bones. It feels like they were forced together due to her pregnancy, without her recognizing that she is capable of being in a loving relationship. She is still the same person she's always been, just now a mother. Thoughts? — Alexis
Matt Roush: I prefer to stay out of the Bones-vs-Castle fan battle as best I can, while noting that I'm not the least surprised that Castle's finale, with the passionate Beckett-Castle clinch, was more satisfying for fans than the way so many Bones fans reacted to the similar situation a year ago, and how those consequences continue to play out on that show. (Now if Beckett becomes instantly pregnant, all bets are off.) These shows operate within the same genre — light mystery with romantic subtext — but the characters are so different. Bones is such a bizarre creation, almost as divorced from human connection as The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper, while Beckett may be damaged by her past but is much more part of the real world around her. I don't expect Bones, even after motherhood, to change any more than I've expected Dr. House or Sheldon to have sudden character-altering epiphanies, whereas Beckett's emotional journey is much more relatable. If they were both telling the same story the same way, I'd probably be fielding charges of plagiarism. There's no pleasing all constituencies here, but I don't think these game-changers will harm either show in the long run. For what it's worth, I thought Castle's finale was a model example of how to do it right.
Question: I've been a Castle fan since Day 1. I get that this show is essentially a love story wrapped around a TV crime procedural premise; however, I think most people are missing the nuances that the show-runners have infused into their storytelling. Although the pace of the romance has been unrealistically slowed down for TV, I believe the Castle/Beckett dynamic — with apologies to Booth/Brennan, Tony/Ziva, and House/Cuddy — is the most adult depiction of the will-they-or-won't-they couple I've seen since Remington Steele. Because of that, I've been able to suspend my disbelief that people who want to be together would behave this way for four years, because I'm invested in all of the characters and having fun watching them get to where we know they're headed. This is my way of complimenting the superb acting by Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, particularly this season. They consistently display deft, natural subtlety in their non-verbal expressions, and I'm stunned that the Emmy voters haven't yet noticed. OK, so Fillion received a People's Choice award, as did the show. That's fine. Being popular with fans is one thing; being recognized for your craft by peers is another. What's your take on this? — Brian
Matt Roush: They're both very appealing, but this is not the sort of show (rightly or wrongly) that's likely ever to factor into the Emmy race — not when there are so many powerful dramas out there, especially on cable, which are taken so much more seriously. Dramedies like these tend to suffer when it comes to awards recognition. They'll just have to settle for popular success.
Question: Great Castle season finale, but will this ruin the series? Why don't they have Kate quit the force, become Mrs. Castle and together they can be this generation's Nick and Nora/Hart to Hart? They will have to get an Asta or Freeway. (Maybe you can put a bug in someone's ear — we certainly have enough cop shows!) — Joanne
Matt Roush: For the real skinny on where Castle is heading after the game-changing finale, check out Adam Bryant's interview with the show's creator. But I like your idea a lot. Especially the dog part.
This just in May 11th, from TV Guide: STORMING THE CASTLE:
A major event in "shipper" history, as Castle finally brings "Caskett" (Castle-Beckett, for the uninitiated) together in a blistering emotional clinch, but only after Beckett resigns at work (for now) and Castle Deletes Her File (how symbolic). She's furious at him for keeping her in the dark the whole last year over the ongoing threat to her life, and he's fed up with her stubbornness, even after openly declaring his love for "the most remarkable, maddening, challenging, frustrating person I've ever met." But after what I call her Vertigo moment — watch the first scene of that Hitchcock classic, and you'll understand — during the rooftop chase for the sinister Cole Maddox, she has her epiphany. While hanging to life by her fingertips, she didn't care that the bad guy got away this time. "All I could think about was you. I just want you," she says. And they're off, satisfying fans' needs at long last, as Castle gazes at the bullet scar on her chest, and they kiss, they smile, they hold hands as they walk out of camera range for some much-needed privacy. Guess she'll fill the void left by his daughter Alexis, who in her valedictory graduation speech paid tribute to the people who "are our solid ground, our North Star, and the small clear voices in our hearts that will be with us always." Most would agree she's leaving her dad in pretty good hands.

This just in May 7th, from Zapit TV: Castle' Season 4 finale: Castle and Beckett finally get together - Andrew Marlowe dishes on the hookup
It's happened, folks -- after four long seasons of "will they or won't they" sexual tension, Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Det. Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) finally acted on their urges and wound up in bed together during the "Castle" Season 4 finale. While legions of Caskett 'shippers perfect their victory dances, creator Andrew Marlowe opens up to Zap2it about the couple's long journey together.
"It's really a nicely passionate scene," Marlowe says of the moment Castle and Becket finally get together. "It's a scene of recognition on both their parts, recognizing the journey that they've been through. We end almost on that note, with a promise to the audience that let's see what happens when they wake up the next day and what this relationship looks like."
No, he won't skip over the good part of the relationship, where Castle and Beckett are learning how to function as a couple. "I think that with a relationship like this and these two characters, how hard earned the relationship is, a lot of people are going to want to see how it goes and what the two of them look like in a relationship, and we think it's going to be a lot of fun."
Although some fans might've gotten frustrated after Castle revealed his love for Beckett and they still didn't get together, Marlowe says he hopes they'll look back on the season as a whole and realize the writers were heading toward this ending the entire time.
"Yeah, it was absolutely the plan, from actually two thirds of the way through Season 3 when when we knew we were going to end it with Montgomery getting shot and killed and Beckett getting shot, and the revelation of Castle's 'I love you.' We had that long before we ended the season," he explains. "I knew that we could sustain about a season once the 'I love you' was out there, so it was always to have arrived at this place. And you know, I think the fans that have been frustrated by what we've done this year will look back at the year differently once they know that our two guys got together. Just because it was always the plan from the beginning."
But while it's great that Caskett is finally actually a thing, things didn't turn out so happily for one of "Castle's" other fan-favorite pairings. Ryan and Esposito end the year with betrayal, which Marlowe says was another outcome they've planned for a while.
"We planted the seeds but not heavily," he says. "The two of them are kind of a reflection of Castle and Beckett, having a little bit of that bicker banter back and forth. We can't work with Nathan and Stana all day every day, so it was important for us when we had scenes when they weren't in it we were still maintaining the tone and integrity of the storytelling of the show, that we still had that sort of witty rapport and banter going back and forth between them."
Ryan and Espo have always been buds, so tearing their partnership apart is a big change. "I think that we're pushing them into new territory as well, and part of my hope is that in growing the characters we can give more interest and longevity to the show. We're not going to be taking the same characters through the same journey over and over again -- we're actually going to put them into new and interesting places, and in doing that we're actually able to recommit ourselves to the fundamental values of the show, the fun of the show."
Whether you're happy with the Season 4 finale or not, be glad Marlowe didn't go with the first draft. "They break up and we end the series and I move to the south of France. Oh, that was the other version," he jokes.
This just in May 7, 2012 from TV Guide: Castle Boss: "I Have No Intention of Pulling the Rug Out From the Audience"
Are you still with us Castle fans?
After four seasons of will-they-won't-they romantic tension, the ABC drama's Season 4 finale seemingly brought mystery writer Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) together with his muse, Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). But getting there was no easy task.
After a murder investigation put Beckett on the trail of Cole Maddox (Tahmoh Penikett), the man who shot her in last year's season-ender, Castle had to reveal the secret he's been keeping all season: He's been investigating Beckett's mother's murder covertly in order to keep her away from the case and therefore keep her alive. The betrayal hits Beckett hard, and it seems the duo's partnership is finished.
But after Beckett nearly dies during another run-in with Maddox — and after her recklessness causes her to resign from the police force — Beckett runs to Castle for a passionate make-out session before ultimately leading him to the bedroom.
So, did Castle and Beckett actually get it on? And what does this mean for their future? We took all our questions to creator Andrew W. Marlowe, who assures us, this is only the beginning.
So, you finally put Castle and Beckett together. Why was now the time?
Andrew W. Marlowe: Ultimately, you get to a fork in the road. If we kept them apart any longer, say another season — after what Castle had put on the table at the end of last season — in my mind, that would have been the death of the series. Then, we would have just been being artificial. They would have become brother and sister, and then we're just ignoring everything that had happened. There comes a point where you have to confront it. ... We wanted to get the point where we resolved it and made a promise for next season that these two are going to have to be dealing with their feelings for one another.
Of course, we didn't see whatever was about to happen in that bedroom. Are you planning to pull a fast one next season?
Marlowe: I have no intention of pulling the rug out from the audience. I think that when that scene ends, everybody is clear on what's about to happen. We don't need to see it, but we know it's going to happen.
So to be clear, there won't be an urgent phone call that Castle's mom has been in an accident or something like that?
Marlowe: No. I think we need to get to the other side of the storytelling. I think we've played the interruptions as much as we possibly can. And I think we're really interested to see what's going to happen with these two. What does that relationship look like? This is going to allow us to reembrace some of the fun, because relationships are tricky things and they don't always go the way you want them to.
Are you saying this season didn't have as much "fun" as you would like?
Marlowe: Yeah a little bit. We had a lot of fun this season, but Castle and Beckett were each keeping secrets from one another and weren't dealing with each other completely honestly. I think some of the angst of this season — we paid for some of that with some element of fun. That by no means is me saying the fun left the show, but we had to spend a little bit of that capital in a different place. Getting to the other side of this allows us to bring ... [back] the back-and-forth between them and the physical comedy. It allows us to recommit to the fundamental values of what the show is.
So you want to see them in a more playful place with one another?
Marlowe: [Seeing them] figuring out their rhythms with one another is going to be fun for the audience to watch. In no way do we think this is going to end the fun and the tension between Castle and Beckett because the question is now going to become: Where does this relationship go and how does it affect their ability to work together?
Would you call them a couple at this point or is it not that defined?
Marlowe: I think those are all the questions the characters are going to be asking themselves, and that's going to be part of the fun. When they wake up the next morning, are both of them still in the same place? And Beckett's actually resigned from the force. So, what is she going to do with her life now? There's all sorts of stuff to jump into next season.
Why does Beckett resign in that moment?
Marlowe: It's a reflection on what she's been doing with her life and how she's defined herself. This echoes back to a conversation she had with her therapist in "Kill Shot" where she says, "I want to move past this." [Does] letting go of her mother's murder allow her to choose something else in life, where she's not as driven to be a cop? Or will things happen that will force her to recommit to it?
You mean like the fact that Cole Maddox is still vowing to put her in the ground for good? Will that bring her back to the force perhaps?
Marlowe: We'll hopefully make it more interesting than that. That's a little conventional. There's going to be some of that, but we're also talking about some other things that are really interesting to us. ... But yes, unbeknownst to Beckett, her life is still very much in danger, and that's something we're going to be picking up the thread on when we come back next season.
Have you already planned the resolution of that cliff-hanger?
Marlowe: Yeah, we have. I don't want to go into in too much detail because we still have some moving pieces on the board on that one, and I'm not going to commit myself to anything one way or another. But it is something we plan to pick up on when we get back, but it's not somewhere we're looking for the series to dwell. We're looking to get Beckett beyond some of that stuff to the point where she can rediscover who she is and [she and Castle] can deal with this decision they have made.
Gates was able to bring her claws out again. Will that continue?
Marlowe: Inevitably, we have to see more of that side. Beckett and Esposito [Jon Huertas] have crossed a line. So, what does that mean for them as cops? Gates [Penny Johnson Jerald] ends up being much more of a significant obstacle in the first couple of episodes next season.
And Esposito doesn't look too pleased with Ryan (Seamus Dever)...
Marlowe: [With] Beckett and Castle getting together, we felt it was time to challenge some of the other relationships so we'd have somewhere to go with the storytelling. Ryan has to make a choice that ends up with Esposito feeling like he's been betrayed. The two of them are definitely on the outs.
For all the 'shippers this finale will make happy, we're sure there's some who fear this development will hurt the show. What's your message to that group of fans?
Marlowe: Just because these characters have decided to take the next step in the relationship, it doesn't make the relationship that much different. This is just a natural progression in a much longer story about these two characters. When two people have traits that are fundamentally challenging to the other, the comedy doesn't go away. [We] have to deliver great fun shows where the characters are challenged in the relationship the same way they were before they slept together.
So it's safe to assume the relationship won't be completely smooth sailing?
Marlowe: We do put the relationship under threat right away with Maddox's threat at the end of the episode. [Beyond that,] I have a good ballpark sense of where we're going. And I'm not going to advertise it too much because that's the fun of the ride. You don't want to show everybody exactly what the rises and falls of the roller coaster are when they get on it. You want them to be surprised at the twists and turns. Sleeping together is a great hallmark, but to get to the promised land of a happy ending, there's a long way for these guys to go.
Have you heard for sure that the show has been renewed?
Marlowe: No official word. [ABC is] very supportive of us, but ultimately I don't want to tempt the TV gods. Fingers crossed we'll hear good news soon. ... It would surprise me if we didn't come back, but that being said, I'm sure people have been surprised before.
So, when's the wedding?
Marlowe: [Laughs] Maybe in Season 8 if we're lucky?

Stana Interviews

Castle' star Stana Katic on last week's epic finale: 'I think waiting any longer would have been unfair and dishonest.'
by Sandra Gonzalez – Entertainment Weekly: Posted May 14, 2012
Castle‘s season finale last week left fans who’d been eager to see dynamic duo Castle and Beckett take their relationship to the next level satisfied and excited to see what’s to come. Stana Katic couldn’t help but tease to us with the “what’s to come” part, but she did share her mutual excitement for the pair’s big step. She took us behind the scenes of the finale by breaking down Esposito’s decision to back Beckett while searching out her mother’s killer, and talk about her big rooftop fight!
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: This season finale felt perfect for the journey we’ve been through this season. Did you see it kind of the same way?
STANA KATIC: Yeah, I loved it. I felt like if we waited any longer it would be untrue to the characters. They’ve gone through a lot together, a lot of really great moments and a lot of really scary journeys together. I think waiting any longer would have been unfair and dishonest. So I think [creator Andrew Marlowe] did a really great job bringing those two characters finally to a point of complete honesty with each other.
Did you have a favorite moment? Hint, hint.
[Laughs] It was very special to me to work with the core team on this episode. Everyone was invested in making it special. And everyone brought a level of performance that I think we haven’t seen up to that point. That added to the story. So there were a lot of moments. I think that Castle confessing his love over a conscious Beckett was really cool. Really sweet scene. And the boys were amazing; both of them: Seamus Dever and John Huertas. Just stunning. Captain Gates (Penny Johnson Jerald) brought a level of strength that I thought was imperative to that story. It was quite nice throughout. I can’t quite choose one.
id you like seeing Esposito side with Beckett?
Yeah, John and I have talked about that in the past. We feel that there is probably a back story that signals that the two of them have known each other and been good friends for a while. There’s a certain kind of renegade quality that Beckett has that Esposito also has. Their rules aren’t always as by-the-book as they might seem. They have a certain sense of honor and integrity that is sometimes against the rules, and might not be the safest kind of path. I thought it was really cool to see the two of them have each other’s back in that way. I thought that was a real sweet moment of friendship. We saw a hint of it in “Kill Shot” where Esposito saved her life. And was a real source of friendship there. It was nice to kind of explore. So there were some break-ups and there were some getting together at the end of the season. And one of the break-ups was the bromance, right? So that’ll be a journey that we’ll see next year — we’ll see what happens with Ryan and Esposito. That’s a nice kind of thing to throw into the mix for storytelling next season.
When you saw that Beckett was going to quit, what went through your head?
‘Badass.’ Because everything that she served [and] everything that she has fought for doesn’t have the same meaning at that point. She gave her all to that job, and to be put into question in that way, I feel like a character in that moment, they have a moment of clarity and perspective that difficult to see, like ‘This is what is really important in life.’ In that moment, it was Castle. That’s the only thing that’s important. Even her job as a detective didn’t matter. Finding justice for her mom’s murder didn’t matter. It’s finally just about living life and enjoying the gift that it is.
On to the fight scene — tell me about some of the work that went into that.
It was fun! [Laughs] [The fight coordinator] really wanted Beckett to be a non-issue for that guy. So many times you see her as a tough, motivated action person, and she’s actually owning the space. And in that fight, she’s completely incapable against that man, and I think that’s true to form. She’s gonna fight, she’s gonna give it everything she’s got, she’ll risk her life, but she’s incapable, really, against the forces that she’s facing in that case. And I think that was a really nice showcase for that point.
Now that you say that, I think that’s what scared me during the scene. I was scared FOR her!
Good! Because that’s really what she’s facing. She’s not facing an easy win. If she goes after these people, she is going to die, and that showcased the reality of it. That guy whipped her around like he was a bear and she was a little kitty cat. And that’s a really neat image to show exactly what she was up against in the big scheme of that storyline, in the big scheme of that kind of part of Castle. So now we have to talk about everything that’s gone on with Castle and Beckett, where do you see it going?
I don’t know what they’re going to do. I know that Andrew is always felt that the show has that kind of His Girl Friday feel. And I feel in any relationship there are these wonderfully charming, complicated moments of adjustment and getting to know each other in a relationship that are quite charming and compelling to watch. So I think if anything they’ll probably explore a lot of that. Andrew has a lot of humor and a wonderful wit about him, and he’s got a big heart in the end. So I think we’ll have that color in anything he writes.

S(her)lock holds fort in cop genre By Debashine Thangevelo

IT was about 8pm and there I was, standing in the corridor outside my flat taking Stana Katic’s call because of the poor reception inside.
I’m sure the sight of me juggling my cellphone while furiously typing away on my laptop must have been hilarious, but I hoped my composed tone during my tête-à-tête with the actress didn’t betray me.
After commenting on the weather warming up on her side of the world, Katic expanded on the impact that bagging the role of Detective Kate Beckett in Castle has had on her TV career.
“Um, I think every role, whether in TV or film, has a part in building a career and relationships. This one (Castle) has created an awareness – no doubt. But, ultimately, they are all part and parcel of telling amazing stories with incredible people,” she shared.
Unable to stop smiling at the recollection of her audition for the part, Katic chuckled: “I think I was a smart-ass in the room. They liked that. There was some sweet story behind the audition story. Having travelled for about an hour, I was told: ‘They have a scene for you, go perform it for the camera’.
“Unfortunately, I came in with a shirt that was almost like a tunic. I thought I would make it work, but it just wouldn’t tuck in. I asked the hairstylist for a pair of scissors, and ran into the lobby.
“Nathan was grabbing a coffee and I asked him to cut off half the tunic. He said: ‘I can’t promise a straight line, but I can cut it’. The producers came in, saw that, and…”
The rapport the producers spotted between the actors is the crime drama’s big selling point, where Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), a mystery novelist with writer’s block, shadows Kate and helps her with her cases.
On the complexities of her character, she rationalised: “Kate is obviously driven by a need to find justice as she was tremendously affected by her mother’s mother.
“She’s a wonderful human, but she’s imperfect and can sometimes be stubborn. But she has this over-riding desire to rectify wrongs.”
Tenacious, intelligent and beautiful, Katic, who owes her good looks to her Serbian father and Croatian mother, enjoys tapping into the different emotional layers of her character as she juggles being in authority while maintaining “that sense of sensuality”.
Four seasons in, Castle viewers have their fingers crossed, hoping (and waiting on tenterhooks) for the writers to finally exploit the chemistry between Castle and Beckett.
As for getting to work with Fillion, the actress, who has built her career on the big and small screen, admitted: “He is really funny and loves cracking jokes. I learnt a lot from him – even when he wasn’t intending to teach me. I am blessed to work with a sweet cast, really!”
On Castle’s phenomenal growth, she explained: “We started out with a fanbase that was very local, and on the internet, and that kept us afloat in the first two seasons.
“After that we started finding a larger audience, with the show getting a bit darker and trying to figure out what are the parameters of our voice.
“The show is different because of a combination of things. There is that romance the audience is rooting for. A balance between the drama and the comedy. Viewers invest in the characters as there is a weight of reality (to them).”
Singing the praises of creator-writer Andrew Marlowe, Katic revealed this season is her favourite by far.
“Every character has been well-established thanks to Andrew and the rest of the writing staff. Now we are all free for more interesting, dangerous, quirky and romantic stories,” she shared.
As for whether we will finally get to see her and Fillion act on those flying sparks, the actress laughed: “It’s obvious they love each other. There is an interesting journey they will go on.
“At the beginning of season four, we find out more about her recovery and the people behind her mother’s murder. She begins a journey of self-discovery.
“One of my favourite episodes is when she has a flashback to the 1940s, thrust into a world of private investigators and gangsters.”
Still keeping a foot in the world of the silver screen, Katic says For Lovers Only struck a chord with the independent film community. And she is pondering taking on a few other projects.
She also expressed a keen desire to work in more period dramas.
“I think Game of Thrones was extraordinary. I want to do some period pieces. It would be lovely to tell great stories, that is my main ambition. And to be working with amazing creators,” she confessed, before saying good-bye as our time was up.
Relieved to be able to put an end to my so-called juggling circus act, I have to admit Katic’s candour and poise are impressive. And I have no doubt her exotic looks and versatility will ensure she is as arresting in her other projects as she is in Castle. Such talent can’t be handcuffed to one show for ever.

STANA pronounced (Stah - na ). "I was named after my grandmother. It means "evil eye", name for warding off evil things It's different and connected to who I am." - Stana Katic on what her birth given name means.

Stana was born to Serbian parents who immigrated to Canada from the Dalmatian area of Croatia while it was still part of the former Yugoslavia. " My family is from Eastern Europe. They had to start from the ground up, and succeeded in making a wonderful living for all of us, my siblings and myself, For us, it was a valuable lesson in hard work and how one can achieve one’s goals. I couldn’t have had a better pair of people to raise me. They’re very kind and loving people who’ve lived the American dream.”
Stana's hometown is Hamilton, Ontario located about an hour from Toronto.
(Stana commenting on her parents raising her & her siblings) "I grew up outside of Chicago, we moved to the states when I was very little, then I would go back and forth to study, and to visit my family. That was the beginning of our emigration to North America, so it was all part of that"." You have to give me some slack because I spent a large part of my life in Chicago, I help stimulate a lot to the US economy" (laughs)
"There’s six of us, I have four brothers & one sister. I’m the oldest. There’s about seven years between all of us, from top to bottom. We’re all oddballs doing different things in the world, and they’re all on their way to growing into really interesting adults, although I don’t know if any of us will ever really be adults, because we’re all really strange. (laughs)." "They are all interesting and they’re all beautiful, really tall, and they’re all adventuresome. They’re wonderful spirits and I’m really honored to have them as my siblings. It’s like walking with an army when we go someplace together. (laughs) I’m really proud of them."

"When I was four, this lady in a pizza shop asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I said “An actress,” and my dad gasped in horror. (laughs) And that was always an element of my life from then on. I’d wake up at 6:30 in the morning and force them down to the porch and make them do plays, with ballet costumes and random pieces of clothing we’d collect. Whenever family would gather during the holidays, we’d put on a play, although somebody would inevitably argue and be upset with the character they were forced to portray, and the play would fall apart. It was always an element of my life. There’s nothing better than acting."The great thing is I always had playmates, we always had great imaginations ; always had each other to develop these little stories."
"We have a family business that we built from the ground up. In typical immigrant fashion, they came with nothing and built an empire. We have real estate and own a furniture business. I remember playing in our furniture warehouse as a little kid, and I think that was the beginning of my imaginative streak. We had a whole warehouse from the 1920s to play around in. Everything was accessible to us. We’d take these huge boxes that furniture was shipped in and make castles out of them. I would play with money: thousands of dollars that would lying on a shelf, at age three, on the floor with customers walking around, and not a single penny would be touched. That’s a really wonderful memory, and it was a tremendously wonderful playground to begin life in. The luxury of creativity wasn’t afforded to my parents because they had to build a life, and they had to survive, so I feel very lucky that I’ve gotten to pursue a creative life. They educated us & inspired us, they challenged us & we challenged them. They let us travel & gave us lessons: piano, ballet, karate etc. They are ambitious. They’re fabulous parents & I’m really fortunate to have them. When I was growing up, my parents encouraged me to pick a path that was safe and sane."
"My mom’s proud of Castle and I think it’s just something sweet that I get to share with my mom."
Stana finished her high school studies from West Aurora Senior High School in Aurora, IL in 1996. In a class of 700 students, Stana graduated in the top ten of her class. Stana attended The University of Toronto & began exploring her career options while at the University of Toronto." I studied a lot, International Relations biology & modeling." Then a chance meeting with a friend changed the course of her destiny. "I randomly ran into an acquaintance on the street in Toronto who asked me if I would work on this miniature indie film they were putting together. Just like that, I was back on track." Says Stana.(Attended DePaul University, The Theatre School, Chicago, IL)

"I think Beckett likes the color purple. I think it’s her favorite color. And I think she likes strawberry shakes."- Stana Katic

" I'm the black sheep of the family."
FASHION MUST - HAVE: “I have a one-piece green military jet fighter suit my brother gave me. People see me and they go, ‘Where’s the plane?"- Stana Katic

"Thank you for being fans and supporters, it's really fantastic, I'm actually kind of flabbergasted that is a fan and supporter. I love that they just watch my stuff and hopefully enjoy it, that's good enough for me. If they want to call themselves fans and supporters than it's really fantastic and it's an honor; I really appreciate it ."" Thanks to all of the awesome Stana and Castle fans that attended the Paley Festival the other day. I ...am constantly in awe of how much you support the show. Thank you. It has kept us afloat for the past year." " I'm so honored. I've never had fans before so it's really cool." - Stana Katic commenting about her admirers of her acting career.

"Watch Stana Katic on the set for a few hours. She'll knock your socks off with a single line and a well placed, laser-beam glint of her eye. Then, between takes, she'll grab a mic and break the crew's heart with a torch song. Then, she'll turn back into ambitious, sexy Officer Morgenstern without breaking a sweat." - Frank Miller, "300," "Sin City"
"Stana's a big discovery. Get used to hearing her name, because she is going become a very big star. I mean, I've watched this happen before in any career--when we cast Heath Ledger in 'The Patriot,' or putting Will Smith in 'Independence Day.' There's times when actors come into your film, and you just look at the dailies, and you think, 'Wow. We're getting to see the early work of someone who's going to be a very big star and going to be around a long time,' and Stana's like that." - Dean Devlin, "Independence Day"

"An enthusiasm unparalleled by just about any actor in America, with Sophia Loren looks and Charlie Chaplin goofy humor... There isn't a role she can't tackle." - Rick Pagano, Casting Director, "Hotel Rawanda," "24," "Bottle Shock"

Stana Katic unquestionably owes her dark, sensual allure to her Croatian ancestry.

Stana On Acting

"Acting was always the focus ." - Stana Katic
“I sincerely believe that the greatest achievement that a person in the performing arts can do is help people transcend, to help people come out of themselves for a moment, and, perhaps, change through an experience that the performer provides."
" I've always been involved in drama, since I was very little. I used to put on plays on the patio. It’s been part of my life. It wasn’t something I necessarily immediately pursued. I’ve always done plays, done theater."
When you are given the opportunity to be an actor, you are asked to leap deeper then anybody else on the planet is asked , because you have to use all of the information all the senses you can grab onto. So you grieve a bit deeper, you taste a little bit more fully, you fear deeper."As an actor, I feel like you're asked to live life as vibrantly as possible."
"It makes it weird to work in this industry sometimes. When I need to get a moment of perspective, when I feel as if I’m getting ridiculous about something, I’ll just go away and try to communicate or become in communion with truth, and then I realize how ridiculous all these worries are. They mean nothing! In 300 years what will any of us or our little problems mean to people."
"If you play sex, that's just body. And that's boring. But if you play everything else, that's interesting. I think that's sexier than playing sex." "You don't have to prostitute yourself to be sexy."
"For actors, every time we do a new role, it’s kind of like entering into a new sandbox. The only thing that you can hope for is that the person on the other side of the sandbox is willing to bounce the ball back to you."
"When I'm acting I lose myself, and it’s the most amazing feeling, really wonderful."
"There’s something that is amazing about being an actor because we’re asked to live life as vividly and kinetically and electrically as we possibly can. I remember traveling to New York once with some photographers, and I started to see the world through their eyes, and the way they took photos. Their eyes were constantly taking photos, and what I think an artist does, is frame moments and making that moment noticeable. And by framing that moment and bringing notice to it, they were elevating it, and perhaps even elevating our experience as we walk through the earth and see. I think that actors are blessed with the opportunity to experience all our senses in that way, where we’re asked to frame every moment because one day, perhaps I’ll be able to grab a moment and it will create an echo in a character or it will be a definitive line I can deliver to the audience and maybe it will elevate our experience. There’s nothing better. We could be working in a steel mill, where you’re forced to shut so many of your senses down just to get through your day. So for those hours that we’re in the steel mill, we’re not living. But as an actor, you’re asked to remember it, and live vividly"
" Sometimes a character comes to me from a painting or a photo and sometimes it is music. Sometimes I have to do a lot of research on the life and the world of that character in order to understand her. Sometimes I can draw on my own experiences, it's like a grab bag, I go and take whatever I can get wherever I can get it. It's just a search, you kind of start off seeing if things tickle and ring true here and there and you go on that road for a bit and then hopefully it leads to finding more out about the character.""I think there are moments you completely believe in what has been created where everybody is completely committed to the scene and in the moment. It's just exciting to experience that because that's the drug of it". "To play emotional scenes such as 'Sucker Punch 'are the most interesting to play because you’re actually delving into character. So it’s not that it affects me in a negative way. It’s challenging and exciting and those are the kind of pieces/parts I want to work on."
..
"The heart is crazy, and as an actor, you always have to keep it open. I feel sorry for artists who have left us early. They deserved to have someone who could help them open their hearts again, and as an actor it’s hard because some actors are more resilient, but some actors need someone around them to help take some the hardness off that formed around their hearts. You can almost feel it in some people, and in yourself, happening on a physiological level. You can see it physically, too. What people do is they crunch in. It’s an animalistic thing where you’re using your ribs to protect your heart. The heart has been injured in some way. When you learn to open yourself up, it’s amazing the transformation that takes place: the breath becomes fuller. The heart becomes open. They’re vulnerable, but there’s something so amazing about brave vulnerability. You always have to fight for that as a creative person because it’s so easy to get clamped down. Sometimes the more sensitive of us, and the more “in moment” we are, the more sensitive we are, sometimes we need help from someone else, so that we can reopen." - Stana Katic

"Acting's a funny thing... it's a collaborative art, so i'm always stuck grabbing someone and saying something like "run lines with me" or any other random number of 'let's work together' scenarios... you can't really do anything in a vacuum when working on a character... and then because of that, everything is always in flux... awesome, terrifying, and curious all at once... madness, i tell you." - Stana Katic (March 13, 2011)

”I studied international relations, pre-law and biology before I finally succumbed to the lure of the performing arts. Blame it on Chicago’s Goodman Theatre “They did a really great job of breaking the actor down and starting from scratch,Letting you experience the world in a very new, childlike way. Not that that wasn’t already natural to me. We witness the world through our senses. Observations we actors have to be open to. To keep our tentacles out there, feeling the world around us, experimenting and engaging with it. It’s part of who we are asked to be, whether it’s onstage or in a film. Those are wonderful building blocks in school.” - Stana Katic (May 2011)
"I didn’t realize how great it was at the time I was studying there. (laughs) It was very important to the initial stages of becoming an actor, because you gain tools. I was young and naive and inexperienced, so many of the tools I received at the time, I didn’t full receive, and it’s only now that I’m learning what those tools meant. But that’s okay, because you receive information, then when your body, mind, and heart are looser, you’re ready to receive it and it will settle in. I don’t think acting is ever a finished trade. Like every creative, we’re always learning more. In fact, I’m taking classes right now, in Suzuki, which is a type of training based on Japanese theater. It’s a mixture of martial arts and theatrical training. It helps an actor learn how to remain open through physical duress, which can come from anything: stress, physical pain, mental pain. It helps you learn how to communicate through all of that, which is really amazing. I’m taking it up again after initially studying it in drama school. I wanted to touch base with it again, because I felt like it was the basis of characters like Russell Crowe’s in Gladiator, Lady Macbeth, or Cleopatra who are powerful entities that experience because of their greatness, experience more than the average person does. In spite of all of that, they still have to express. Did you know there was a part of the ancient Greek theater, which was very spiritual in its original conception, where a priest would come out, call up to the gods, and ask for a blessing. In their beliefs, the blessing would then come down to the priest and he would then conduct that blessing out to the actors, who would then sing back a response, and the play would begin. I thought that was really wonderful, on a number of levels. The characters those actors played were so huge, so bigger-than-life that I think how they dealt with it was to let it leave their shoulders and be the responsibility of the gods, so they were only the conduits of this greatness, this great, insane power, without it overwhelming them in their lives. I feel like I’m blathering, again. Am I making any sense? (laughs)" - Stana Katic on studying acting at Goodman School of Drama in Chicago

“I’d like to play Cleopatra, And I’d like to play Kate in ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ I’m already playing another Kate.“And I’d like to play Antigone. The rebellious ancient Greek girl who buried her dead brother against the King of Thebes’ commands, thereby unleashing woe and gnashing of teeth in the house of Creon? “I like the classics,I think the classics help us create the present day ones.” - Stana Katic ( May 2011)
" I think Cleopatra's fascinating. I’m just beginning to learn about her and her diplomatic capabilities. For someone to keep Rome at bay during her rule, they could’ve easily come through and taken over, but she kept Egypt in tribute to Rome, and she also managed to keep the Egyptians at bay, as well. She’s the only Ptolemaic ruler who learned Egyptian, who took on their ancient religion, thus endearing herself to the people. She fell in love, sort of. (laughs) We’ll see if the truth about that ever really comes to light. At the very least, falling in love with these two powerful men, Caesar and Marc Antony, was a brilliant strategic move. And she wasn’t beautiful, by any means. She was charismatic, incredibly smart: spoke Latin, Greek, Egyptian and God knows how many other languages & dialects, as well. Her whole family, all her brothers and sisters, were out to get her, yet she was the favorite of her father…You know it’s funny, I think Michael Corleone is such an amazing character, but we have a present-day history in our media culture of having those characters only being played by men. I’ve never envisioned myself as playing anything other than those characters." -Stana Katic on the life of Cleopatra

Stana Interests

Enjoys soccer, yoga, karate, baseball, softball, basketball, horseback riding, swimming. archeology, archery, astrophysics, flamenco dancing & designing clothes as well as bring an avid reader.Speaks four languages."Serbian, obviously English, Italian, and French. Some of it I studied and some of it I learned from my home life. My parents are European immigrants. And I think as Europeans there are so many languages in close proximity that it's part of the culture to try to learn at least one other language. So my parents really encourage it in the house. Chinese would be really great to learn — like Mandarin or Cantonese. Portuguese would be incredible." Stana is interested in environmental issues & music .
Skilled in fencing, scuba diving, archery, falconry and horseback riding, and she’s studied martial arts. She’s fluent in Serbian, French, English and Italian. She even learned Navy Seal knifing techniques for her role as a Russian assassin in the 2008 film Stiletto.(Stana credits her spirit and wanderlust to her parents. )
"Right now I’m really into horseback riding and archery. I used to have a target on set, but they were kind of freaked out I might impale someone. Now I’m looking to build a target range on a rooftop. I admit I’m a little bit of a tomboy. I love soccer. I like karate and basketball very much. All the things that mainly guys are interested in .That’s certainly the reason why unfortunately, men are afraid of me."

"I’m kind of a book nerd, love romantic stories, chivalrous men and reading poems. I work long hours, so I like to come home and read a book or watch a movie. Sometimes I like to have tea or take a run & then there is HGTV" "I do have a couple of favorite books. The Master and Margarita is one of the favorites. And another one is Zorba the Greek." Growing up I read a lot about Joan Of Arc & Pippi Longstocking all these fantastic adventures. Pippi Longstocking was my role model as a child."

" Before Castle I just traveled for two months to Yugoslavia, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro and Turkey and Russia. My friends were like, ‘You can’t go! What if Steven Spielberg calls?’ But you don’t always find inspirations sitting on a set. This past summer I traveled around Europe and French Polenysia. If I’m not working on a film or other project, I try to travel and explore as much as possible. Polynesia was particularly wonderful because i got to visit with an archaeologist who took me on a tour of ancient burial and temple sites. It was astounding to see the remnants and to learn about that beautifully self-sufficient and powerful people because so much of their history was eradicated by invading explorers and missionaries. I'm pretty good. I've been doing cross-Atlantic flights since I was 5 and I enjoy it. I try to get away. It's very unusual for me to be in one spot for so many months, which is one of the things I've had to get used to for a television show. I enjoy going on adventures and seeing the planet." - Stana Katic

"I got to visit with a falconer here in Southern California during the summer molting season. Falcons are beautiful hunters, and of course they sit at the apex of their food chain. So, learning about them was tremendously informative in regards to the state of the environment as a whole.People think I'm a little weird but I love archery. It really takes my upper body and because alert the whole time and my breath has to stay stay steady it's actually peaceful & calming.I even set up a target ion the set of my show so I can practice my technique between takes. It helps keep me focused, which I need for acting.I try to go to an archery club every Saturday." - Stana Katic on her hobby of archery

"If I really need to de-stress I'll go for a run and blow off some steam."
"I love to go trekking on my own and visiting new countries. Once your comfortable by yourself you learn to be more at ease with others. My last trip was to Milan, Lake Corno & Rome. When I do go to a new place , I explore on public transportation- There is no better way to get a sense of what a city is about then by taking a ride on a subway or bus. " - Stana Katic (February 2010)

I "I try to walk to work as often as I can though I don't do it every single day since sometimes we start at 5 am in the morning. But I try to do it at least once a week. Some weeks are easier than others based on the workload and stuff. Seamus [Dever, her costar] and I are working on The Alternative Travel Project and we're doing the next installment of it this month. We're giving up our cars for 7 days throughout the month, going car free and trying to travel back and forth from work in that way."
Do people recognize you during your walks?
"No and I think it's because Los Angeles is a car-centric city. There aren’t lot of people walking on the streets. I rarely encounter another person. Hopefully the LA culture will change a little bit as the public transportation structure builds up and downtown continues to build up. We'll see more pedestrian movement. We've definitely seen some great strides in the cycling community infrastructure here. It’s on its way."

Stana gives of her free time to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles hosting events and fund raising. Helping children is an easy commitment to make and is something that I will always look to do. In Children’s Hospital Los Angeles case, a friend asked if I would do the Nautica triathlon two years ago. if agreed to do it only if I felt confident that the majority of funds raised went to the hospital. After a tour of the hospital and conversation with the head of philanthropy, I knew that helping the hospital was something I could confidently support because the funds would go where promised. - Stana Katic (August 2011)

" I'm always testing my limits " - Stana Katic

"I try to stick to an organic diet and not eat a lot of processed foods, but I still love a steak and white chocolate every now and then. Saving rich dishes for special occasions make them much more enjoyable when you do have them." - Stana Katic

Stana Flicks

Stana's list of a few of the film directors she admires in movie history .William Wellman, John Sturges, Robert Aldrich, Don Siegel & John Ford.
" I would love to work with Jack Nicholson, I think we would have fantastic verbal swordplay and I think we'd just tear a scene up. He and Daniel Day-Lewis, that would be genius. I was talking to a friend of mine and she said that Daniel Day-Lewis is a smart woman's dream." “I have been part of pure comedy stories as in ‘The Spirit' and have even been a part of romantic flicks such as ‘Feast of Love.' So it really has been a mixed bag for me. Also, it's more about how much I like the character I play and less about the genre.” Being part of a Bond movie - . “It's an awesome feeling to know that I share in this amazingly classic and rich legacy.”
"The three actors I would like most to work with Daniel Day Lewis, Russell Crowe & Tom Hardy."Little known fun fact: Stana's first audition ever was for the role of Elektra in 'Daredevil'. She skipped classes and drove down from Toronto to Chicago to read for casting. The role eventually went to Jennifer Garner, who was directed in the Daredevil sequel 'Elektra' by 'Castle' director Rob Bowman. While filming 'The Spirit' with Frank Miller, Miller gifted Stana with his graphic novel edition of 'Elektra'.(March 7, 2011)
"My favorite movie is OUT OF AFRICA" - Stana Katic ( Closer French Magazine Dec. 2011)

What draws you to a character?
Stana: " I’ve only recently started having a choice. So much of starting off is just trying to get work. And then as you move on, you get to pick work you find inspiring. But I don’t know what it is. There’s like a flutter. Something makes your heart glow when you’re reading it. Something that speaks to you. There’s this wonderful dance that you recognize intuitively while reading it. And intuition isn’t like a hammer over the head, it’s like a butterfly sweeping by your cheek. It’s really soft ... but it feels so good. "- Stana Katic (June 2010)

Stana Sings

Stana Katic has an Alto-Mezzo Soprano singing voice.
"She sings like a bird". - Nathan Fillion
I'm always the person that is deejaying spaces and moments and stuff and so I love-- I'm crazy about music. " (Nov. 2, 2011)

"I was trained on piano, that was part of grade school and high school and growing up and stuff, so the sound of the piano is always something that is a real kind of comfort food for me."

Castle

What fans will see is probably the fulfillment of what most any fan would like to see happen with the Castle and Beckett relationship. Fans will be seeing the ultimate expression of love for those two characters. “ — Stana Katic (Jan. 2012)

Coffee is symbolic for those two characters … no matter who brings the coffee, her or me, it’s like this is our Good Morning Kiss … a way of saying … without actually using words : ” Good morning, my heart. How are you doing?
Nathan Fillion on the importance of coffee in Castle and Beckett’s relationship
Kate Beckett's an authority figure, but Castle has never had an authority figure in his life. She's an expert and, in a lot of ways, she's smarter than he is. He's not used to that. He really likes this woman, and yet there are all these complications. He doesn't quite know how to tiptoe around, and he pushes too hard in areas where he ought to leave them alone.
Nathan Fillion on why a Castle/Beckett relationship is unfamiliar territory:(Sept. 2011)

"I would say the usual stereotype for a female police officer is a strong, hard, by-the-book kind of character. And I think that’s what [series creator/executive producer/show runner] Andrew Marlowe is bringing is something that’s more classic and a throwback to a different style of film making. Originally, Detective Beckett is annoyed that she’s in a way babysitting this superstar, who she obviously admires because she reads his books. As we move on in the series, though, the two of them gain real respect for each other’s qualities and for the way that they can handle a case. I think if we were to paint a parallel in order to understand what the dynamic really is, it would be closer to THE THIN MAN or HIS GIRL FRIDAY, where they both take turns benefiting from each other and bringing the lightness and the comedy in solving the cases, and bringing the intelligence and the heart, which in the end is kind of the thrust of the whole piece, isn’t it?"

There’s a Lubitschesque [referring to the films of Ernst Lubitsch, who made such ‘30s and ‘40s romantic comedy classics as NINOTCHKA, HEAVEN CAN WAIT and TO BE OR NOT TO BE] quality. Lubitsch always brought this classic, subtle sexuality to his characters. I think that’s the aim, to bring this subtle elegance and sexuality and sleekness. As much as we’re antagonizing each other, we’re always attracting and admiring each other throughout, and it becomes stronger" - Stana Katic (April 2011)
"It’s all about the people you work with. If it’s a great working environment it makes the job all that much easier. Not only is the cast fantastic but the crew as well. Everyone is an absolute joy to work with here and when you are fifteen hours into a day, that is what makes all the difference. When you get along with and work well with other actors it is easy to have a good chemistry because you have a natural affinity with them. That is what it is like working with the entire cast, we are now all great friends and so working together on camera comes easily."

"Castle" premiered in the spring of 2009 (March) as a replacement series. Starring Nathan Fillion as the "ruggedly handsome" (his words) Richard Castle and Stana Katic as the cop-turned-muse, "Castle" worked on the premise that a mystery novelist, Castle, pulled some political strings to tag along with New York City detectives for background on a novel he was writing. Stana Katic plays the professional and often annoyed Kate Beckett, who grows fond of having the imaginative and smitten (with her) Castle helping solve some of the city's murders. Often humorous, "Castle" works -- and there's the bonus of seeing real mystery writers on the show, like Michael Connelly (the Harry Bosch series) and Stephen J. Cannell (now deceased) (the Shane Scully series and television's "The Rockford Files," "21 Jump Street," "Wiseguy," etc.) as Castle's poker buddies.

" It's a wonderful opportunity I wanted to take advantage of doing something lighthearted and romantic - comedish. Now a lot of movie opportunities are opening up for me that might not have had I not taken this kind of project. Were looking at a lot of scripts and stuff. We work 14 -17 hours a day but we REALLY have a fantastic crew & awesome cast. The fans have been really wonderfully receptive.'"- Stana Katic on Castle the series.

❝He promises he’s going to brush his teeth today with tuna and I …I’m gonna take a look at some garlic.❞ - Stana Katic commenting on her first kissing scene on Castle with Nathan Fillion
“I’ll tell you. I liked when they kissed. (laughs) That was great. I love the moment when he walks in on her in the bath and she’s naked and she’s like “God, can you just not look?” you know? I love the silent smiles between the two of them when one is admiring the other and the other one is admiring that same person. You know where they have those moments of shift? They get to soak each other up. It’s a private moment that a character has, and it’s really sweet to see that. Where they are enjoying each other. Jeez, what else? There are tons of moments. They always seem to squirt them in.” — Stana Katic talking about her favorite Castle/Beckett moments

What surprises you the most about your show?
"I don't know if it's surprising, but what I like the most is the teasing between Kate and Rick. This classical atmosphere like Clark Gable and Rosalind Russell. This exchange of cutting remarks between man and woman right in the middle of a flirt is delightful!"
You seem to love flirting is it something innate ?
"I don't know … Isn't it a passion like any other ? I really love this anyway ! I love passionate and spirited women. Same for men! "(laughs) - Stana Katic on Rick & Kate & herself (May 2010)

CASTLE OF COURSE!

"He’s funny. He’s very nice, very kind. We didn’t realize that we were both Canadians until we had both been cast. It was nice to sort of bond over these Canadianisms that we would squeeze out every now and then. He's a sweetheart an absolute sweetheart . He's lovely it's true. He really is a lot like his character it's great!" (laughs) "Of course. “Nathan's been there, done that. There is always something or the other he advices me on. He's a whole lot of fun and is solely responsible for the way in which the show bounces back and forth naturally.” The writing lends itself to a very Hepburn-Tracy type of rapport, so it’s easy to simply say the words and find that wonderful rhythm. In addition, Nathan has a history with and a wonderful knack for comedy. On my end, I’ve become a big fan of the Hawksian dame-- fast-talking, spirited broads like Rosalind Russell, Kate Hepburn, and Barbara Stanwyck. Using them as an inspirational resource helps in adding to those charming verbal sparring sessions .“It’s a dramedy set with the backdrop of procedure,” she explains. “Like Moonlighting meets Breakfast at Tiffany’s."“Doing ‘Castle' is undoubtedly amongst the best choices I've made professionally. It's fun to do pieces that are reminiscent of classic Hollywood movies. Also, I realized there was much scope to develop as an actor as the series comprises many genres, ranging from crime and drama to comedy and romance. I'd be silly to have not taken this up.” If the show is doing so well, it's all thanks to the writers who have crafted the entire plot so perfectly that nothing is a misfit." “Their imagination and creativity is at its best here, but the story remains absolutely believable."He's adorable. He tortures me sometimes by bringing me wine gums from Canada, because he knows that I'm addicted, but apart from that he's a pussycat ! (laughs) He's super funny, loves to make other people laugh. We have a great time working together. He's like the big brother who gives me advice, I can always rely on him… I hope he'll find someone fantastic to share his life with soon." - Stana Katic on working with Nathan Fillion & on Castle.

“She’s making an adult decision not to dive into something because she doesn’t want to screw it up. She's in love with him. She's dated other guys, but he's the only guy she's been in love with."-Stana Katic (Sept. 2011)

" I think that's an important relationship, and I think Castle might throw it off to protect himself ... But I'm sure it's valuable for him to know who [his father] is and to have some kind of connection with that person. I'm sure it will come up again, and I think it's an interesting character discovery." - Stana Katic on Castle's not knowing who his father is.

" What happens in the morgue, stays in the morgue." - Nathan Fillion

Nathan Fillion - "Stana is like a delicious cake. She knows the language of seduction and we have fun together” ( Spanish magazine 'Supertele'2010)

“Stana is as serious as a heart attack about her work. She’s got this binder. She kind of dogears pages, she highlights, she writes notes. She has this binder with her all the time. And when I’m not doing a scene, I’ll often be reading a book or playing a game on my iPhone or Twittering. She’s got her nose in her binder, drawing notes and folding pages. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody work so hard.” — Nathan Fillion’s answer to the question, “What is an attribute you see in Stana that you have not seen in other actors?(Oct. 14, 2011)”

Detective Kate Beckett

" I feel like the character is well served with the way she is presented right now on the show. She's well-served by being able to be feminine and tough. The whole look is a balance between the hair, the wardrobe, and the makeup. I don't feel pressure to keep her hair long. It's more about where the character is. Right now she can let her hair down and show her feminine side and doesn't have to be as buttoned up. We get to see other parts of her. She's a little girl, she's a tigress, and she's a warrior. She's insecure and she's indomitable. She's everything. I think showcasing some of those parts make her more believable and more fun to play."

"I think she's a beautiful, strong woman who makes mistakes and tries to do her best. I love people with flaws who are trying to grow and keep progressing both personally and professionally and I think she's great female role model"

Stana Katic on what she liked about Kate Beckett:
I like the way that Kate is imperfectly perfect. She doesn't always make the right choices, but she will try to. When she doesn't make the right choice, for whatever reason, she wants to get it right in the end ... I like it when a person fails by accident, but they then try to step up to the plate in order to try and fix things. Kate always tries to do better. She always tries to improve. (Sept. 2011)

"I am a method actor, so when I landed the role I traveled to New York, solved a homicide involving a zoo keeper and two escaped orangutans from Central Park Zoo. Then I bought myself a police badge and practiced pulling it out in front of the mirror roughly 48 times! "

Beckett’s got a different kind of quality from me, as far as serious about her work [laughs], and so there are times where I have to kind of work into the Beckett world on certain days, whereas other characters have been a lot closer to who I am naturally. - Stana Katic (April 2011)

" It was so fun to play, so exciting because I loved working on that storyline. I think they will address it before the season ends but I don't think we will solve it this season. Definitely we are going to go and deal with it because it was such a strong thrust to that character." - Stana Katic on solving Kate Beckett's Mothers murder. (Feb. 2010)

"I think she has a little bit of a female superhero quality...there's more complexity to her than your average female detective"- Stana Katic on her character Kate Beckett.(Comic Con - July 25, 2010)

When Beckett's in the work force and she's catching killers, she has to be the point of the spear ... She has to be unwavering and strong. When we allow the character to be shown in her private moments, that's a different side, a different paradigm." “I can't even begin to imagine the hard work it takes to cross the threshold and later move up the rung in a male-dominated profession. But the good that comes out of it is that these women become more resilient.” “Men are most definitely intimidated by women who prove to be as good and as strong as they are, both mentally and physically. Come to think of it, how amazing is it to date a beautiful and intelligent woman”

"I like playing Kate. “I love that she’s flawed. “I love that she tries to do the right thing, but she doesn’t always do the right thing. I believe in characters who aren’t perfect. I believe in people. And I believe in playing characters that are like people.”

What do you like most about Beckett?

"I think she’s like a female superhero on television, and we’re slowly exploring more and more of that. She’s got a tremendous amount of integrity. I’ve gotten to do more stunts lately, which is really cool. They’re letting us show more of her sexier side. She’s complex, and she’s also flawed. She’s not a perfect character, so there’s a lot to play in that.It.was a really strong and fun character. I enjoyed the dynamics between the characters in the pilot, and loved the idea of learning stunts and performing action sequences.

"I'm definitely more criminal and wilder then her. I have girlie-girl moments and tough chick moments. I love doing fight sequences on the show, and then I like to dress up and go out and have fun."

What do you like about Kate Beckett ?
"Her integrity and her fight for justice. She's looking for answers, she became a detective following her mother's murder. Without this she might have studied at Oxford University and have lived a "normal life" in Manhattan."

Is Kate Beckett anything like you?
"We are both intellectual but I'm a little bit more liberated, more creative & definitely more frank. She's so reserved that sometimes I feel like she's 10 years older than me! "(laughs) - (May 2010)

Nathan said that he's to old to do stunts himself what about you?
"I love stunts. It's sometimes a problem because initially I've studied martial arts, usually when you attack somebody you use all your strength while here(on Castle) you don't. I really need to concentrate to control myself when we're shooting fight scenes because I really could hurt someone if I'd let myself go !" (Laughs)

"I relate to Kate Beckett in a lot of ways. I think she is a strong, independent, career-driven woman who is not afraid to show her feminine side. At the same time, we differ in that I am more of a free spirit and perhaps less “by the book” than she is."

Like I said, it was a very strong character. I enjoyed playing her and doing all the action stunts that you don’t see women on television do so often. I believe a woman can be strong, intelligent, sexy and feminine. I consciously pushed Beckett in that direction because I believe it is important to show a woman in that light. And the audiences have certainly responded in a positive manner. I am always receiving wonderful comments from women and even men who find it refreshing to see a modern woman in such a positive and relevant way.

Rick & Kate

What are your hopes and wishes for Kate in future episodes?
" A baby. I really want her to get pregnant with Castle’s baby. I’m even sure that we’ll end the series with Kate and Rick being together and having a baby. I think it’ll be a boy. " ( laughs ) - Stana Katic (Closer French Magazine Dec. 2011)

Stana Katic on how Beckett deals with relationships:
I understand that she is a girl who doesn't want to break up something that's really great. She doesn't want to break up a great friendship and a great working relationship. I think any girl in Beckett's situation would probably make the same choice. (Sept. 2011)

"Either she will have to marry him or kill him."
(jokes Stana.) - Commenting on Kate & Rick

Stana Katic has said that fans of Castle should not dismiss the programme's romance plot as a typical love story. In the show, Katic's alter ego Kate Beckett has grown close to Nathan Fillion's titular character, but the pair are yet to act on their feelings. "I think the difference between Castle and a lot of other shows is that Castle is kind of a throwback to those classic romantic comedies," "There's a lot of swordplay between the guy and girl character and sexual tension is built upon that." (April 5, 2010)

Do you think that Beckett and Castle will ever get together or should get together?
Stana Katic: They're definitely made for each other, definitely a fabulous pair and they solve crimes together so well. They're both obsessed with it. I think like any really, really good meal you're going to take your time enjoying it and I think the two of them have a lot to learn about each other still. There's the question from Beckett's perspective of what happened to Castle's last two relationships, why did they fall apart and why would she just jump into something. I think they haven't totally opened up with each other about their feelings for one another. Although, we do kind of flirt with the issue throughout this last episode that I'm doing right now which is really fun. We're going to take our time getting there as well. There's so much to learn about each other and I think since it is that kind of relationship that it makes sense and so why not enjoy the characters, enjoy what it is that makes them tick and then slowly bring them to that final point. Kate and Castle are kind-of like a great wine. We’re going to take our time enjoying all of the flavours and nuances before we finish off the bottle and get down to business. In doing that, I’m sure we'll be exploring the personal lives of both of the characters in more depth before they fully dive into each other; and i wouldn't be shocked to see both of them going out on dates before they make it back to one another again.
Stana Katic has admitted that she wants her character Beckett to get together with Castle. Katic dismissed claims that the show’s tension could be lost if the pair begin a relationship. “I think that those two characters make a lot of sense together,” she said. “I understand that lately, many people have this belief that all the romantic tension and comedy will stop when a couple gets together. But I believe that whether they’re together or whether they’re not together, that tension and sexual swordplay should still be available. I might be overly romantic, but I think that if a couple gets together there is still an element of spice in a relationship.”Married couples, or people who are together should still be able to have that wonderful back-and-forth that a man and woman can often bring to a story. There are so many great examples like Adam’s Rib where Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and playing off of each other beautifully. Even something as recent as Mr. & Mrs. Smith, I mean they’re married but they just throw it at each other, it’s so sexy." - Stana Katic (June 2010)

"Men should never marry their muse. It ruins the illusion" - Stana Katic
Should Rick & Kate date or wait?
Stana Katic says date: “I might be naively romantic, but I believe that a relationship can be just as spicy when people get together as it was in the chase. The complications that happen when characters like Beckett and Castle get together can make for interesting viewing. They have ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends, he has a certain kind of lifestyle and she has a certain kind of lifestyle — and then on top of all that, they actually really care for each other. It would be neat to see how these two people attract each other and drive each other crazy. I’d love to see what happens when Beckett actually touches on a couple of his pet peeves. It would be fun to see her torture him a little bit, you know, in a fun way.”
Nathan Fillion says wait: “When you get people together, [viewers] stop with the yearning, they stop with the wanting. They go, ‘Ah, finally. They’re together. All right, what else is on?’ I know as an audience member, I enjoy knowing more than the characters I watch on TV know. [With our show it’s] looking at these two, saying, ‘Just turn around! She’s making the face right now! She’s making the face! You’ll see it! Ah, you missed it.’ The lack of resolution is what keeps people coming back. I think the challenge is how do you serve that so it’s not repetitive.”
Andrew Marlowe says wait, but not too long: “Fans wanting them together, network keeping them apart? Sure, there’s a dance to be done there. Look, I know from other shows that if you get the characters together too early, you can lose the audience’s interest. But I also know there is a certain point which, if you go beyond it, you’re just jerking fans around, and the characters on-screen become more like bickering brother and sister. They act like that, and the romantic spark goes away. I think there are real-life obstacles that get in the way of a relationship, which we’ll get into. And I do feel there’s storytelling to be had, once the two of them get together, because there’s stuff to figure out there — but I don’t think we’re at that point yet. I feel like my job is to keep the audience invested in the relationship without them feeling they’re getting jerked around.”
Who’s right?

Stana reminds us that unlike the audience, Beckett doesn’t know that Castle’s still coming to the station because he’s crazy about her. “These are things that he’s admitted to himself, maybe to his daughter. Beckett can guess at it, but I think to her, he’s still the man about town, a cheater, a gigolo. He’s not interested in her in that way,” she says. “I was talking to Andrew, and I said, ‘I don’t remember Beckett knowing why he broke up with his last two relationships.’ I know that it came up in one of the episodes that Gina cheated on him at some point, and I said to Andrew, ‘I think I would have remembered that if Beckett had heard that.’ He said, ‘That’s because it was information that came out in his loft, and Beckett wasn’t there.’ So there’s stuff that Beckett still doesn’t know about Castle, and there’s stuff that Castle doesn’t know about Beckett, too. There’s still some growth for the two of them along those lines.” - Stana Katic (March 21, 2011)

Andrew Marlowe Castle Creator & Executive Producer: "She (Beckett) plays him (Castle) like a fiddle," to which Stana Katic replied, "I think there's nothing sexier than swordplay." Eyebrows all the way up, Nathan Fillion said, "Wow." - An Evening With Castle - March 16, 2010

Stana Katic's dress reminds me of the prints from Alexander McQueen's show with those hoof-shoes and alien makeup/hair. It fits her like a glove and truly flatters every inch of her body. Great choice.
