We hate to start the week off with bad news, but Teena Marie, best known as the soul singer behind hits like “Lovegirl” and “Square Biz,” passed away over the weekend at the age of 54. The cause of death has yet to be determined but appears to be due to natural causes.

A former protege and collaborator of Rick James, Teena Marie merged elements of pop, soul and a nascent genre called rap to create a genre-defying catalog of music throughout the ’80s. Although she spent most of the ’90s raising her daughter, Teena Marie was nominated for a Grammy in 2005 for best Female Performance for her track, “I’m Still In Love” from her 2009 album Congo Square.
