Game’s ‘R.E.D.’ Debuts At No. 1

.The Game’s new album, R.E.D., has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 this week. The record sold 98,000 copies first week, which is not a huge number for a No. 1 album but remains impressive in today’s download culture. This is the rapper’s third No. 1 disc, following 2005’s The Documentary and 2007’s Doctor’s Advocate. His last album, LAX, debuted at No. 2 in 2008 with 239,000 copies sold (see what we mean about the growing download culture?).
.
“It feels amazing to be back on top,” Game said in a press release. “My fans are incredibly loyal. I was able to step away from music for some much needed personal time with my family. And now that I’ve returned with a new album, they’ve come out strong to support me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my fans. Period.”
.Jay-Z and Kanye West’s joint Watch the Throne, which has held the top spot for the last two weeks, has been bumped down to No. 2. That record sold 94,000 copies this week, which means in total it has sold 707,000 copies. Which is good, but when you consider that Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV is expected to do nearly 800,000 just this week it makes you reconsider whether those exclusive sales deals with iTunes and Best Buy were the right choice.
.Also in the Top 10: Adele’s 21 lingers at No. 3 while Barbara Streisand’s latest lands at No. 4. Muppets: the Green Album takes the No. 8 spot with 30,000 copies sold (which is about 29,000 more than we’d expect).
