Fin 2007, Fortune sortait un premier maxi dense où quatre bombes pop/rock synthétiques rivalisaient d'ingéniosité pour nous faire danser et nous émouvoir en même temps. Autant dire que l'album était attendu au tournant…
Assez loin de son précédent duo hip hop électronique Abstrackt Keal Agram qu'il formait avec Tepr, Lionel Pierres écrit aujourd'hui pour Fortune des chansons pop en anglais. Une fois passées entre les mains des autres musiciens du groupe, celles-ci prennent les atours de hits new wave jouant autant que possible la carte du clair-obscur. En effet, la limpidité des mélodies côtoie ici un groove souvent sombre, et ce contraste finalement peu courant demande à être apprivoisé dès les premières écoutes de "Staring at the Ice Melt". Un autre aspect caractéristique de cet album tient dans son équilibre permanent entre écriture et production, sonorités acoustiques, électriques et électroniques, références conscientes et inconscientes.
Et justement, concernant les influences, alors que nombre de groupes identifiés aujourd'hui comme "post-punk" se placent clairement dans la lignée d'une ou de plusieurs formations mythiques (au choix Joy Division, Talking Heads, Gang Of Four, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Human League, New Order…), Fortune fait de l'anti-jeu : si l'on peut entendre ponctuellement des réminiscences de certains de ces artistes dans la musique du groupe, les influences citées par son leader vont aussi bien de formations pop/rock des années 1960 telles que The Zombies, The Troggs ou Love, à la disco en général pour son approche rythmique, en passant par le "King of Pop", Michael Jackson. Du côté des artistes ayant émergé durant la dernière décennie, ses références incluent Grandaddy, Dopplereffekt, Lo-Fi-Fnk et Vampire Weekend. Citons également The Cars, un groupe parfois oublié dont le tube de 1982 "Since You're Gone" fait ici l'objet d'une reprise étonnante et addictive. Un choix d'autant plus intéressant que si The Cars est loin d'être la référence principale de Fortune, les deux groupes ont finalement beaucoup en commun, à commencer par l'écriture en elle-même. Mais aussi et surtout par la fusion qu'ils opèrent entre pop, art rock et synthétiseurs, un peu comme l'avait initiée auparavant Roxy Music.
Cependant, l'alchimie dont il est ici question aurait difficilement pu s'opérer sans un important travail de production. Ce rôle a été confié au "cinquième membre" du groupe, Pierrick Devin, qui a par ailleurs collaboré avec Adam Kesher, Alex Gopher, Cassius ou encore Cut Copy. En plus de ce travail de production, il a composé l'interlude éthéré "Cars" et co-composé le très romantique "Venus". Le mixage, déterminant dans la recherche d'équilibres décrits plus haut, a été assuré par Stéphane "Alf" Briat, déjà producteur ou mixeur pour des artistes tels que Phoenix ("United"), Air ("Premiers Symptômes", "Moon Safari", "The Virgin Suicides"), Sébastien Tellier ("Sessions")… Enfin, trois artistes sont également venus enrichir la palette sonore de l'album : Arnaud Roulin de Poni Hoax (basse synthé et clavinette), Jean Thévenin (percussionniste déjà entendu du côté de Hopper, Tahiti Bob & The Palmtree Family, Soko, Toyfight…), ainsi que Melody Prochet (alias My Bee's Garden) pour les choeurs.
On l'aura compris, "Staring at the Ice Melt" est le résultat d'un travail abouti et tout en nuances centré autant sur l'écriture que la production. De quoi aiguiser la curiosité quant à la transposition en live… L'exercice ne devrait cependant pas décevoir étant donné le savoir-faire dont les 4 musiciens ont déjà fait preuve dans le passé, que ce soit au sein de Fortune ou de leurs précédentes formations.

At the End of 2007, Fortune released their first Ep, an intense delivery of four Synth Pop-Rock bangers brightly crafted to simultaneously create uproar in the crowd as well as stir the emotions inside you. Needless to say the album to come was eagerly anticipated.
Miles away from his former Electro Hip-Hop duet Abstrackt Keal Agram that saw him pairing with Tepr (Yelle), Lionel Pierres now writes Pop songs in English destined for Fortune. In turn, as the musicians in the band get to add their creative input, the tracks then start to sound like new-wave hits, just highlighted with more contrasts. Indeed, the melodies flow easily against an often darker groove, requiring some time to tame this unusual antagonism when first introduced to “Staring at the Ice Melt”. Another significant feature of this album is the permanent balance between writing and productions, acoustic, electric and electronic sounds, conscious or unconscious references.
As for the influences, whereas most bands now labelled as ‘post-punk’ are clearly heir to one or more mythical acts (take your pick from Joy Division, Talking Heads, Gang of Four, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Human League, New Order etc), Fortune goes against the flow : if you can spot, here and there, a few familiar sounds from those artists in the band’s music, the references put forward by the front man range from 60s Pop Rock bands such as the Zombies, The Troggs or Love, to basic Disco for its rhythm, or even the “King of Pop” himself Michael Jackson. Grandaddy, Doppler Effekt, Lo-Fi-Fnk and Vampire Weekend are quoted amongst the more recent bands having come to light in the last decade. Also The Cars, a band not often brought up despite their 1982 hit “Since you’re gone”, feature here through an astounding and memorable cover. A somewhat interesting choice since The Cars (far from being the main influence) and Fortune have a lot in common, starting with the song writing itself. Moreover they create a particular blend of pop, art rock and synthesizers, a little in the style of the initiator of that sound, Roxy Music.
However the chemistry could not have stuck together had it not been for an overwhelming production effort. Pierrick Devin, also regarded as the band’s fifth member, was given this task, as he had been before by Adam Kesher, Alex Gopher, Cassius or even Cut Copy. His involvement also extended beyond producing, since he also wrote the music for the light-hearted interlude “Cars” and co-wrote the very romantic “Venus”. The mixing, vital to find the adequate balance of elements described above, was put in the trusted hands of Stéphane “Alf” Briat, also producer and mixer for such artists as Phoenix (“United”), Air (“Premiers symptoms”, “Moon Safari”, “The Virgin Suicides”), Sebastien Tellier (“Sessions”) etc. Finally, three additional artists also contributed to the album’s musical richness: Arnaud Roulin from Poni Hoax (bass guitar and clavinet), Jean Thévenin (percussions, who also played with Soko, Toyfight, Hopper, Tahiti Bob & The Palmtree Family) and Melody Prochet (aka My Bee’s Garden) adding vocal harmonies.
As you will have gathered by now, “Staring at the Ice Melt” is the result of a well rounded-off effort, with various contrasts evolving around writing and production. Enough to spike your curiosity to see the band convert this into a live performance; an attempt that should be rewarding since all four musicians have proven their worth in the past, whether with Fortune or with their previous tryouts.
