A la voir débarquer ce matin dans un café du XIIe arrondissement parisien, cheveux en pétard et teint des lendemains de cuite, qui pour imaginer que cette fille compte parmi les voix les plus stupéfiantes de sa génération ? Pas le serveur revêche qui jauge sans gêne sa dégaine, sorte de patchwork téméraire entre sweat zippé 80s, grolles teddy-boy rouges, tatous colorés, manières chaleureuses et énergie brute. Laura Peinetti – dit Lippie - vient d'achever un grand disque : « An Imaginary Truth ». Un album beau, fragile, direct, truffé de mélodies immédiates. Un truc avec du pouvoir. Un geste sorcier. Désarmant d'honnêteté. On lui dit tout ça d'une traite tandis qu'elle écoute, attentive, sans grimper aux rideaux pour autant : « Franchement, pour moi, c'était on l'enregistre et une fois fait, eh bien, à mardi ! ». La franchise, Lippie l'a vissée au corps. Des années à écumer les salles en solo (« Je ne savais pas comment on monte un groupe, alors… ») avec guitare, pédale-sample et cette voix jamais préoccupée par le beau, plutôt par « le déséquilibre » et les « situations accidentelles », ça vous pose un personnage. Trajectoire pas rock'n'roll pour autant : la Lyonnaise grandit dans une « banlieue moche », compose dès ses « douze-quatorze ans pour tuer l'ennui », transite par les Arts Appliqués, songe un temps au cinéma et écume ses premières scènes en 2005. « C'est là que ça a commencé à devenir sérieux, un concert entraînant une rencontre et ainsi de suite ». Trois années plus tard, le concours Paris Jeunes Talents la distingue, bourse à la clé. Elle grave un six titres, accompagne Mademoiselle K en tournée, côtoie la clique Black & White Skins (CocoRosie, Spleen, etc.)… On la presse d'enregistrer un album. A dix jours de s'y coller avec une première équipe, on lui présente l'ex Fugees John Forté. « J'adorais un de ses titres récents. On est devenu amis très vite. Dix jours plus tard je lui proposais de produire mon disque ». On savait l'Américain habile. On le découvre subtile dans son choix de l'épure pour sublimer « An Imaginary Truth ». Un disque low-fi par essence où la démesure et la frime sont ici corps étrangers. « John a commencé par créer les fondations rythmiques de l'album, raconte Lippie. En un mois, on s'est retrouvé avec une base solide. Entre-temps j'avais laissé tombé mes reflexes de control freak ». Pas son parlé « anglais » décomplexé. Débutait une collaboration « à quatre mains » avec Forté sur l'écriture du bluesy « Little things » ou de l'inquiet « Killing world », s'entendant avec lui sur le choix de rares instruments additionnels. Ainsi cuivres sobres sur le post-Motown « Little world ». Piano sur l'aérien « First wave of underground ». Basse et voix samplée pour seule architecture de « We fall ». Accord de clavier maigre, batterie mate et beat box pour porter le funk monacal de « Can you ». Sur « Flowers », une guitare et rien d'autre. A peine plus sur « Confessions »… Le résultat ? Bouleversant. Déchirant, souvent. Généreux aussi. Comme lorsque la figure papale du slam US s'invite sur l'aérien « Arabic Hearing ». Ou plus loin quand le rapper d'origine togolaise Tabi Bonney s'incruste en catimini. Dans ce cargo, pas un qui ne joue les gros bras. Plutôt, les guides. « Sévères, mais bienveillants » souligne Lippie, désarmante tout au long de ce grand disque intime, par endroit vulnérable et comme en recherche constante d'une ligne de rupture. « An Imaginary Truth » que cette ligne rappée par la paire Lippie-Forté peut aisément résumer : « Powerfull, beautiful, excellent, little things are what we want ». ........................................................................................... Upon seeing her enter the Parisian café of the XII district, with uncombed bed hair and a complexion betraying signs of last night's drunken bender, who would have thought that this girl possesses one of the most stunning voices of her generation? Well certainly not the crabby waiter who judgmentally stares at her odd appearance, a sort of dare devil patchwork composed of an 80's sweat shirt, bright red teddy boy creepers, colourful tattoos, enhanced by her expressive gestures and an astounding raw energy. Laura Peinetti- alias Lippie- has just completed her first and very promising album: « An Imaginary Truth ». A beautiful and direct yet fragile album, stuffed with intense melodies, a genuine object of power, an item of witch craft, disarming through its honesty. Yet whilst we engage in endless and enthusiastic praise her album, she sits there listening, attentive, without ever flinching with signs of self satisfaction, she quotes: « For me, it was about recording the album in one go, a sort of one shot, where once finished, you look around you, shrug your shoulders and say, well see you guys on Tuesday! » Frankness is a motto that Lippie has sewn to her heart and soul. Years of scouring concert halls in order to perform solo (« I didn't even know how to start a band , so….. »), armed with a guitar, a sampler, and that deep husky voice, a voice which completely disregards conventional beauty in favour of imperfection and « accidental situations », was bound to forge character. Yet this doesn't mean to say that she followed the typical cliché rock'n'roll path : This emotionally grazed girl grew up in the « Ugly suburbs » of Lyon, and started composing « around twelve- fourteen years old to kill time », flew through Art College, vaguely thought about working in cinema and then began performing her first concerts in 2005. « That's when it began to become serious, one concert led to another which led to new encounters and so forth » Three years later, the « Paris Jeunes Talents* » contest, finally shed some light on her talent and she was awarded a grant. Lippie went forth to release a 6 track record, accompanied Mademoiselle K on tour, rubbed elbows with the Black & White skins clique (CocoRosie, Spleen, etc….). As interest surrounding her talent grew, she was heavily encouraged to record a full length album. However but ten days prior to recording her album with a first crew, she met ex Fugees John Forté. « I loved one of his recent tracks, we rapidly became friends. Ten days later I asked him to produce my album ». Renowned for being notoriously skilful, John Forté excelled once again by choosing to keep the creative process simple and refined in order to better sublimate « An imaginary truth ». Hence a spirited low-fi record free from modern excess and arrogant banter. « John began by laying out the rhythmic foundations of the album », recalls Lippie. In less than one month we found ourselves with a solid base. Meanwhile I began to let go of my control freak tendencies », however letting go did not mean losing her English outspokenness. Thus began a precious and strong collaboration with Forté, a collaboration which lead to the writing of bluesy « Little Things », or the weighty « killing world », the whole embellished by a choice of additional rare instruments. One can perceive brass instruments on the post- Motown « Little World », piano on the ethereal « First wave of underground », and original harmonious bass and voice samples on « We Fall ». The recipe: Few synths, stripped down drums and a beat box to tinge « Can You » with a hint of funk. Finally a guitar for « Flowers » one single guitar and nothing else, an ode to Lippie's simple, fragile and unconventional grace. The result is a deeply moving, heart-rending but also a generous vulnerable and majestic musical gem. As lippie herself put it : « Powerful, beautiful, excellent, little things are what we want ».
