  • Bio

Performance Highlights include: Louvre Musuem: Jardins des Tuileries (FR), Trans Musicales (FR), Dour Festival (BE), Arezzo Wave Festival (IT), Festival Les Esacles (FR), Festivales Les Ardents (BE), Empire State Park Festival (NYC), Howl Festival (NYC)... and upcoming L'Boulevard Festival (2011!) ******* ******** Nervous Cabaret’s live performances are bloodily moving: by turns Ellington, Post punk, Led Zeppelin and vaudeville orchestra.

The song writing of Elyas Khan, described by fans as “royalty in dirty disguise”, is an eclectic mix of musical influence ranging from Duke Ellington to Ethiopique, clubland to music hall, that crashes from violent to fragile in a seemingly endless variety of arrangements and orchestrations. ******* ******** The band has 2 releases with Naive (FR), which are distributed throughout Europe. In May 2011 Nervous Cabaret will record their 4th album and begin touring Europe, expanding their horizons to North Africa at Morocco’s L’Boulevard Festival! ******* ******** Nervous Cabaret play around NYC/USA and the European festival circuits alongside Sonic Youth, Tarif de Haidouks, Alain Bashung, Animal Collective, Jamie Lidell, Nouvelle Vague, Amanda Palmer, among others. ******* ******** The groups singer and songwriter Elyas Khan has won several accolades as a composer including a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, Meet the Composer grants, and Nervous Cabaret were also presented at the Louvre Museum’s Jardins des Tuilleries.

  • Influences

Nervous Cabaret’s latest release Drop Drop (US Release Nov 2009) is poetic and relevant taking inspiration from a wide spectrum of experiences: an imaginary conversation with surrealist painter Max Ernst, run-ins with Brooklyn gang members, a cemetery in Paris, Russian movies, the Lost Boys of the Sudan, Sexopolitico fantasies, memories of adolescent love aches, and burning embers.
  • Sounds Like

Intense …You're guaranteed to both dance and cry within half an hour. NY PRESS ******* ******** They're more loud than nervous, and don't expect the Weimar sound. Think Tom Waits as qawwali Gypsy King, backed by Joy Division with Captain Caveman clubbing a tympanum as a drum set. THE VILLAGE VOICE ******* ******** NERVOUS CABARET's dark and sensuous music is a big sweaty mass of punk, Gypsy, jazz and dub. Frontman Elyas Khan emits throaty howls and practically spits out the dense and dramatic lyrics. TIME OUT ******* ******** A band consisting of soft-hearted werewolves, steam-powered drumming machines and trained apes on the horn. They create throaty, blurred soundscapes which it's all too easy to get lost in. The band's based in New York City, but they're more than robust enough be house band in some sleazy Balkan tavern, playing to hordes of leering, vomiting sailors. The sextet boasts two drummers, heart-stopping bass, soaring horns and the sort of vocals that the West End would love if they didn't smoke twenty a day. DAZED & CONFUSED ******* ******** A foot-stomping, barroom-brawler replete with honking, Led Zeppelin-esque Blues-Rock guitar licks, and dual layers of drums & percussion, dipped in the patinated brass sheen of an accompanying horn-section. It's all topped by a vocal performance from Khan that sounds something like the crazed caterwauling of a carnival barker, burlesque-club announcer or some other old-world sleaze merchant... If they'd switched jobs with the singer from a British Punk band from the late '70s. OK PLAYER ******* ******** "Instant Lady" is a raucous racket of bawdiness and hedonism from Brooklyn, N.Y.'s fearsome Nervous Cabaret... Rather brilliant! SALON.COM AUDIOFILE ******* ******** INROCKUPTIBLES: "High Voltage Savageness… a furious sound orgy, a real morality of excess, constantly eluding the expectations of the listener.
